Fall Spotlight: Wag-O-Ween

Wag-O-Ween returns for its 21st annual celebration October 24–25, bringing together dog lovers, families, local businesses, and animal advocates for one of the city's most anticipated fall traditions. The pet-friendly event takes place throughout Historic Downtown Savannah and the Starland District, with activity hubs at Pulaski Square and Starland Yard. Participants and their four-legged companions are encouraged to wear creative Halloween costumes while visiting participating businesses for trick-or-treating, enjoying vendor booths, photo contests, raffles, and the always-popular Wiener Races.

More than just a festive weekend, Wag-O-Ween is a community fundraiser that benefits sixteen local animal rescue organizations and supports the Sara Portman Community Fund, which helps provide community spay and neuter programs. Funds raised through tickets, sponsorships, raffles, and donations also assist rescue groups with veterinary care, foster programs, and finding forever homes for homeless pets.

The event began in 2006 as a small parade created to raise money for area rescues. Over the years, it has grown into a beloved two-day celebration that now attracts more than 3,000 participants annually while continuing its mission of supporting homeless animals and educating the public about responsible pet ownership.

For Savannah residents, Wag-O-Ween represents much more than Halloween fun. It is an opportunity for neighbors to gather, celebrate their pets, and give back to organizations that work tirelessly to rescue and care for animals in need. Watching dogs and their people stroll the historic streets in imaginative costumes has become a cherished tradition that brings smiles to visitors and locals alike.
