The Sugar Shack
A Place Both Nostalgic and Sweet
Just a short stroll from the beach, Tybee Island’s Sugar Shack has been a beloved local staple for generations. Since opening in 1971, this gem has served as a nostalgic retreat for both locals and visitors, offering a sweet slice of island history with every visit. What began as a humble walk-up stand has grown into a vibrant hub of treats, toys, and charm.
The Sugar Shack’s magic lies in its perfect blend of old and new. Inside, you’ll find old-fashioned candies that stir childhood memories like saltwater taffy, candy buttons, jawbreakers, and licorice ropes stacked beside bins of novelty sweets. These retro treasures are a nod to simpler times and a big part of what keeps guests coming back year after year.
Of course, no visit is complete without diving into their vast assortment of ice creams. With over two dozen flavors on rotation from classic vanilla bean and butter pecan to indulgent brownie batter and seasonal favorites, there’s something for every palate.
Beyond sweets, the shop offers a playful selection of toys and souvenirs, from beach balls and bubble wands to kitschy Tybee Island keepsakes. It’s a wonderland for kids and adults alike, bursting with color, laughter, and the scent of sugar and waffle cones.
Recently, the Sugar Shack unveiled a fresh new look, updating its exterior and seating while keeping the heart of its nostalgic vibe intact. With ice cream shaped and themed chairs and tables, string lights, and its signature laid-back island feel, it’s the perfect spot to cool down after a sun-soaked day on the sand. The Sugar Shack is also opening a new downtown location at 230 West Bay Street over Memorial Day weekend!
Whether you’re a first-timer or a long-time fan, the Sugar Shack remains a must-stop destination as a sweet Tybee tradition with a story as rich as its double-fudge sundae. Enjoy, and tell them we sent you!
